A Guide to Amsterdam Nightlife

Amsterdam is famous worldwide for its vibrant nightlife and fun social scene. During the day you have the perfect opportunity to look at the museums, parks and other sites this city is well known for. But at night the faint of heart had better close the doors and lock the shutters, because this is when Amsterdam really comes to life.

Famous for its red light district, coffee shops, nightclubs and bars, people come from all over the world to take in the sights and sounds you are unlikely to see anywhere else. Whether you’re looking to sink a few cold beers in a friendly bar, have a cake in one of the many coffee shops, dance the night away in one of the many nightclubs or take a peek and maybe something else in the red light district. Whatever your fancy this incredible city can cater for you.
So what should you look out for:

Rembrandtplein Square – This area is chock-a-block full of bars, pubs, restaurants and hotels. Very popular amongst tourists and locals, you will find this one of the busiest and lively places in the city and has many nightclubs in it or nearby.

Leidseplein Square – This is also a very popular spot for nightclubs, restaurants cinemas and theatres. The outdoor seating allows you to watch the street performers lining the square until the early hours.

Amsterdam Red Light District – Sex, drugs and alcohol, what more can anyone ask for! Now whatever you’ve heard about Amsterdam’s red light district, good and bad, it’s probably true! Still the area is generally pretty safe and although Sex clubs, sex shops, strippers and brothels might not be your scene it really is worth checking out. The red light district may be notorious, but it actually is quite a charming place as there are great restaurants, old buildings and pretty canals alongside the other sites you’ll expect to see here.

Coffeeshops, Clubs and Bars – There really are too many to mention in this short guide, but the city is absolutely teeming with them. The coffee shops are everywhere are where you can buy legalised drugs and smoke or eat your way to a better place (sadly it’s only temporary though.) The clubs, bars and pubs are everywhere and are fun place to spend the night or warm up during the day.
